I wrote Wild Raging Rivers (How to Swim) in a moment of desperation—I was being called away from the comfort of the familiar and drawn toward an uncertain, uncharted path, and needed a reminder of my own strength and courage. Cheesy as it is to admit, I wrote this as a pep-talk song for myself.
Whether your next big leap is endeavoring to free your voice or something else, I hope this song serves as a loving pep-talk for you.
Storytime: A few years ago, I was on tour in Europe with my band, The Feelings Parade. One day while walking the cobbled streets of Dublin, Ireland, I had a premonition that I was going to meet Glen Hansard, the guy from “Once,” on the street, and sing his Academy Award winning song, “Falling Slowly” with him.
It happened the next day.
A month later he brought us out on his big stage in SF.
Here’s that moment!
(And if you want to go deep into this lore, you can find me singing “Falling Slowly” with Glen somewhere on YouTube).
